When I woke up, the absence of Aaron slapped me back to reality, making me feel lonely and dreary.
I peered at the bedside clock. It was 5 AM.
Where had Aaron gone? Had he left again without even telling me he felt better?
My life had always been drama free. I disliked drama. My emotions had always run free and rampant, but never confusing. Aaron had changed that with a flick of his wrist. Now, my life was composed of mixed feelings. One moment I was relieved with his absence, the next, I craved his presence. It was exhausting.
I scrambled out of the bed, and smoothed my hands over my hair, trying to tame it. Barefoot and wearing the same grass and dirt stained outfit from the day before, I ambled through the house in search of Aaron, but was unable to find him. I pushed the door to the office, my last hope, finding it empty.
God knew where he was. Maybe he had gone away again as he always did in the past. I should have checked the nightstand to see if he had taken his antibiotics with him.
I sighed heavily as I slid the terrace door open and stepped outside. A cool breeze swished around me.
Dawn was my favorite time of the day. My gaze focused on the horizon where the sun would soon make its appearance. If I ignored the distant blares of horns and the haze of pollution, I would be transported to another place. I would be back home, surrounded by pure air and Nana’s arms.
My fingers wrapped around the baluster. It was damp from the morning dew. I drew in a wistful breath. I had always enjoyed walking outdoors first thing in the morning with the wet grass tickling under my bare feet. It was not like that here. Not in the city. With my eyes closed, I focused on the limestone, cold and smooth beneath my fingers. To each facet of our lives we could attribute beauty. In the case of the cold stone it was old and battered. But there was a dignity to the way it withstood the elements. The way it had remained unmoved. Sturdy. I envied its fortitude.
I couldn’t say the same about myself. I was weak. I was changing. Which was fine. We naturally change through our lifetime. However, I didn’t like the changes occurring within me. Should my soul continue to grow dreary, I would become someone I would despise.
I sighed and turned.
“You are unhappy.” Aaron’s voice reached me, making me startle.
“Oh, I didn’t see you there.” My eyes flashed to where his voice was coming from. “I thought you had left.”
He was lounged on a chair, wrapped in a blue robe. He looked desolate and tired. His eyes had purple circles under them.
“No. I didn’t go to work. Even I recognize that this body,” he waved a hand over himself, “needs a periodic rest.”
“How’re you feeling?”
“Much better, thanks to you.” His lips curved slightly.
If my eyes were not deceiving me, it was a small and pale smile.
